He is almost refusing to nurse. He flips out if I try. He had an issue around 3 months but got over it but now I am so concerned bc he only eats 5 times a day anayways. Pretty much every 4 hrs and sleeps mostly through the night. With a meal of solids and a top off bottle that means I usually only feed him 3 to 4 times a day with breastmilk. Has you child ever just given up on nursing at this age???? I am so disheartened when he wont nurse and I have to give him a formula bottle. I know it is still fine for him but I really wanted to nurse until about 9 months. Plus it helps burn extra calories...I still have 20 pounds of my 60 to lose.My son is a mostly breastfed 4.5 month old that just started solids per dr advice, but for 2 days now...?
This happened to me too! The timing was exactly the same. I think it was partially because he became more aware of his surroundings and he wanted to look around at every sound. With a bottle, he has more visual range, but with breast feeding, he can't turn his head. The # of times he is feeding is not as significant as the # of ounces he is receiving each day. As long as he is getting 25-35 ounces in a 24 hour frame and gaining weight (these figures come from my pediatrician), you don't need ot worry. Check out this chart of what babies should be eating at each stage. It looks like you are pretty much on track. My son is a mostly breastfed 4.5 month old that just started solids per dr advice, but for 2 days now...?
Unfrtunately this is what can happen when solids are introduced too early, plus with the addition of a bottle, it's harming your breastfeeding relationship.
Why did the doctor advise solids. Was your baby underweight?
You need to offer the breast to your son as often as possible. He knows now how easy it is to get the milk out of the bottle so he can't be bothered with the breast. You could try using a slow flow nipple on his bottle.
solids are not the problem, it's the bottle. it's easier to suck on a bottle than on a breast, so if you introduce the bottle, that's what they'll prefer. my first son was like that, i breastfed him the first week, then i got mastitis so i pumped and gave it to him from the bottle, well it was two weeks before i tried breastfeeding him again and he didn't want to eat, he wanted the bottle. you should eliminate the bottle or just pump and give it to him from a bottle.
do u think u can stop the bottle temporarily to re establish yr latching? my baby is 4.5 months old too and i just started rice cereals n very dilute fruitpuree on her but thank god she hates the bottle. she has been hating bottles n pacifiers since she was born.lol...
