A year ago I quit smoking - I gained 5lbs in the first 5 mths after quiting. 7 mths ago I had my tubes untied and since then I've gained 20lbs. I never eat more than 1000 calories a day, and less than 20 carbs a day. I workout on the elliptical for 30 minutes every day. No matter what I do I just can't seem to loose the 25lbs. I called my doctor today to discuss options to help boost my metabolism. I was shocked to hear that he wants to see me cause he thinks I may have diabetes. Does this make sense to anyone? I was thinking that quiting smoking, or that I turned 31 five mths ago (or a combination of both) might be the reason for the weight gain.
FYI -- I don't eat any junk food, I only drink coffee (w/splenda), tea (w/splenda) and water, I don't eat bread, pasta, rice, potatoes or sweets of any kind, the only fruits I eat are strawberries and blueberries (in moderation). I only eat raw vegetables, grilled chicken, grilled seafood and cheese (1oz a day).I gained weight - Dr. thinks diabetes - Advice please?
Well, to some MD's--- any unexplained weight gain = diabetes. It's a bit puritanical. But you are in a rut with your workout!
Your body has sought %26amp; found homeostasis with your 30 mins of elliptical training per day! You need to shake it up. Best of luck.
When you go in to see your MD, bring a 2 or 3 day VERY accurate food diary.I gained weight - Dr. thinks diabetes - Advice please?
Take a pregnancy test.
If there is any question in your doctor's mind about diabetes, please take it seriously. I'd recommend that you ask him to do an HbA1c test, which reflects what your blood glucose levels have been on average over the past three months. It would also be a good idea to have a fasting glucose tolerance test.
You could be diabetic or borderline diabetic, or have the beginnings of insulin resistance. If you get a diagnosis of any of those things, ask for help to get it under control as soon as possible. Its normal to gain 5 or 10 pounds after you quit smoking and its also normal after a tubal litigation, but I've never heard of reversing a TL causing weight gain, that does seem a bit odd. Aging is also a factor in weight gain. You are at higher risk because of family members having it, so its a logical area to test.
Someone stated that most people who have diabetes are aware of it. That's not accurate. Most people who develop type 2 diabetes go for 7 to 10 years before they are diagnosed, and there a lot of people completely unaware they are diabetic until they have a stroke or vision loss. I went undiagnosed for several years. My doc didn't do the HbA1c until last year, (that finally caught it, but unfortanately at that point it was really out of control and I already had a lot of damage).
With the workout and carb restricted diet you are on, you really ought to be able to get better results, so it would really be helpful to get these tests done.
I'd also recommend an TSH test, to see if your thyroid function is normal. Make sure he uses the new standard for the TSH test, not the old one.
If your doctor is afraid that you have diabetes, why has he not tested you for it? The sooner you get tested the better. There is a diabetic med out there, Metformin, that aids in weight loss for some people. For me it only gave me intense diarrhea until my system got use to it. LOL
This could, as you know, become serious. Get it checked as quickly as possible. Good luck.
Your physician may also be concerned that you have something known as obesity metabolic syndrome which is why be may want to test you for diabetes.
Well between the hormone changes your body goes thur having your tubes tied and quiting smoking will make you gain weight. That is just normal. Unless you have some other symptoms I wouldn't borrow trouble. Are you constently thirsty? Do you urinate all the time? Feel like you have low or high blood sugars? Most people would be aware if they had diabetes. I would check your blood with your husbands monitor and keeop track of it and everything you eat and give it to the doctor so he can see for himself. No sense in doing a test when you don't need it.
