Very, very, very unlikely that you would catch any disease from a sip from someone else's cup. Viruses do not survive long on dry surfaces - so kissing someone would transfer a disease orally, but drinking out of their cup would not be likely to. In addition, your mouth and intestinal system have a number of defenses against viruses and bacteria designed to keep you healthy. Plus, coffee at the drive thru is usually hot enough to kill off anything that might harm you. As long as everyone at the restaurant washed their hands you are not likely to get anything.
Still gross though! Hope you complained.Seeking advice from a DR. regarding diseases spread orally...?
uh... what... boiling water is 212 F. scalding hot water is 212 F. the hottest water can get is 212 F. lol... ;P
anyway ;p Mono i would be afraid of which is part of the herpes family and can be spread via drinks or kissing, sneezing.
so if you start seeing this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/95/Tonsillitis.jpg
then you have a strain of herpes, mono ;p. probably anyway... blood test would let you know for sure.
The edge of a coffee cup is not a dry surface. Viruses and bacteria will survive on it for a few minutes. Also, coffee IS NOT hot enough to kill germs. I say this because it's scalding hot water that does the trick and no one in the world can comfortably drink even boiling water, never mind water at 150 C.
I'm not trying to scare you to death but I want to give you straight-up facts. You can catch a virus from sharing a drink with someone. Colds, the flu, herpes and mono are all very easily transmitted like that.
Indirect contact with a potential virus will rarely get you sick, but it can happen. Go to the doctor in a week or so to be tested for HSV-1 and HSV-2 if you're really worried. It's the only way you'd know for sure.
EDIT: Haha! Eric B, you're right about the temp of scalding water. I speak Celsius, however. But I was a bit intoxicated when I wrote it, that sentence just didn't come out right...lol :)
