Last week Wed I went to donate plasma for the first time. Everything went fine. I had to be taped up instead of using a band-aid to stop the bleeding but that was it. I went back on Fri to donate again, you have to wait 24hrs at least. Everything was cool through the whole process. I finished and went to wait for my payment, yes they pay you. I decided to tie my shoe so that I could walk around while I waited. When I let go of the gauze they gave me to apply pressure with it started bleeding everywhere. I had to go stand over the trash can and wait a second for someone to bring me new clean gauze and some alcohol wipes to clean me up. While the guy was cleaning up my arm and hand I told him I felt like I needed to sit down. I was feeling dizzy. Next thing I know I was being carried to a bed. I could feel them pick me up and I could see the a little bit of the whites of their jackets, but that's it. I'm not sure if I totally blacked out or not. What's your opinion?Anyone who's dr, nurse, or anyone, need advice. Blackout after donation?
The medical profession likes people to donate blood because they can use it. They deny it, but its NOT GOOD FOR YOU to donate blood. If you care about your health, you'll stop donating blood.Anyone who's dr, nurse, or anyone, need advice. Blackout after donation?
Donating blood should not effect your health.
Donating twice in 3 days is not a good idea. When you went back to donate a second time in the same week, were they aware that you had just given blood a few days earlier?
My bet is that they didn't. Not a good idea.
Fainting or blacking out after donating blood or in your case plasma is such a common occurrence, which is why you are generally urged to sit down for 10 minutes afterwards and have a cup of tea.
Your difficulties arose as much as anything because of bending over to tie your shoes, which meant that your body couldn't compensate fast enough when you stood up, and the profuse bleeding was the final shock that caused you to black out. Next time you donate, make sure you sit still, have a warm sweet drink, tea, if possible, breathe slowly and deeply, and give your body time to adjust to the loss of your donation.
You'll be fine.
wimsey
you need to eat breakfast before going to donate.in between donations, the blood has to have time to build back up.good vegatables. If you are borderline anemic.eating healthier is just good for you.not just so you can donate.
you need to drink good liquids.juices,water.
After donating ,stoop down.Never bend over.Take it slow.
That's why the Red Cross ask you to eat some cookies and drink ,sit down and rest before you get in your car to drive. If you smoke it's a good idea to not to for an hour or so after donating.
It's wonderful , that you took time to donate!
Take care!
